ANNOUNCED

OpenAI's September annualized revenue near $50B, well below the ~$70B it signaled earlier, FT reports

OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue for September was almost $50 billion, a drop from what it signaled earlier, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The company had previously indicated at a separate event that last month's revenue run rate was approaching $70 billion.

The discrepancy mainly arose from an attempt to produce a direct comparison with rival Anthropic's figures, the source said. Unlike Anthropic, OpenAI excludes sales via cloud partners such as AWS and Google Cloud from its headline number — and Anthropic pays cloud partners about 16% of every dollar earned through them.

Both companies are preparing to go public, a process that will give Wall Street a clearer view of their finances. OpenAI started the year at $20 billion in annualized revenue versus $6 billion in 2024, but Anthropic's annualized revenue crossed $65 billion in July and is reportedly set to reach $100 billion by year-end.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported the company is now telling investors it expects to reach or exceed $70 billion in annualized revenue by the end of the year, driven largely by enterprise growth -- up from about $50 billion at the end of September. The figures were shared in discussions for a fundraising round said to target $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation. The revenue news briefly weighed on tech shares Thursday, with the Nasdaq 100 falling 1.4%.

OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast at 6x standard API prices

OpenAI has added GPT-6.1 Sol to its Ultrafast service tier, the company announced October 8. The speed tier is rolling out across the API, Codex and ChatGPT Work, costing $12 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens — six times the model's standard $2/$10 rates.

OpenAI positions Ultrafast as a latency line item for interactive and agentic workloads: up to 6x faster token generation in the API and up to 8x in Codex compared with Sol Standard. The launch completes the rollout previewed September 29, when OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol as a lower-cost model for coding and professional work and said the faster mode would follow within days.

Sol Ultrafast joins Astra Ultrafast, which shipped at DevDay with the $500 Pro 500 plan. Teams now have to decide which workloads merit the speed premium — inference latency is becoming a product feature with its own price tag.

OpenAI Codex gets 'instant' mid-task steering as Tibo's 28-day improvement sprint continues

Codex users can now redirect an active task "instantly," OpenAI Codex engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux announced on X on October 8. The change gives users a way to correct course mid-task — add requirements or change direction while a response is running — instead of waiting, restarting, or letting the model keep spending effort down the wrong path.

It is one of the daily deliverables from Sottiaux's 28-day pledge, announced October 4: each day ships either one clear improvement relevant to most Codex and ChatGPT Work users or a full usage reset. Earlier days brought a ~50% default speed boost for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol and free Codex Auto-review for ChatGPT-account sign-ins.

Mid-task correction is a basic control for agentic coding, and faster steering directly targets the cost of bad-path exploration. Sottiaux did not publish latency measurements, so how "instant" it feels in long jobs remains to be seen in practice.

OpenAI bans two covert influence operations, one from Russia and one from Iran

OpenAI said October 8 it had banned two covert influence operations that used ChatGPT to support "false front" entities. The Russia-origin operation was assessed at Category 5 on OpenAI's IO Breakout Scale — the first Category 5 disruption it has ever reported — while the Iran-origin operation was rated Category 4.

The Iranian campaign ran seven fake journalist personas that pitched long-form articles to small and medium outlets worldwide. The Russian operation appears to have co-opted unwitting people in Latin America to run a self-styled research platform on the ground. Both used false fronts to launder geopolitical and conflict-related messaging into target audiences, according to OpenAI's safety report.

OpenAI said it has now exposed 30 covert influence operations over the past two and a half years, and that operations landing real media placements — like these — have the highest potential reach.

Sensor Tower: ChatGPT at 664M mobile daily users, Gemini at 151M, Meta's Muse nearing 2M

ChatGPT hit 664 million mobile daily active users in September, up 7% from August and 69% year over year, according to Sensor Tower data cited by Bank of America analyst Justin Post. OpenAI said on September 29 that ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users.

Google's Gemini reached 151 million mobile daily users, up 11% month over month and up 321% from last year. The Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users in August.

Meta's new Muse agent app climbed to 1.96 million mobile daily users within weeks of its September 8 launch. For comparison, xAI's Grok sits at 2 million mobile daily users and Meta's own Meta AI app stands at 6 million.

Bank of America frames the numbers as part of a consumer shift away from plain chat toward autonomous, agentic systems that take actions on users' behalf.

OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with 'Intelligent UI' that builds interactive answers

OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT alongside a new capability called Intelligent UI, which lets answers include interactive charts, forms, tappable buttons and diagrams instead of plain text alone. The rollout started October 7 for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, who get GPT-6 Sol, and reaches Free and Go tiers on October 8 with GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says the feature is tuned for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.

Intelligent UI is powered by a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that processes the interface while the model generates it, so elements appear progressively rather than after the full response finishes. The company gave examples like an interactive recipe widget that rescales quantities by guest count, road-trip stops on a map, and on-demand mini tools: a savings calculator, a dinner bill splitter, even a small game played inside the conversation. GPT-6 also starts answering while it is still thinking, which OpenAI says makes responses arrive faster.

The Sol and Luna models debuted September 22 in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API after the earlier GPT-6 Astra launch; this release moves them into the main Chat tab. OpenAI acknowledged the model's design judgment still needs work, closing its post with the line that 'instead of people adapting to software, software will adapt to people.'

OpenAI launches Meetings plugin for ChatGPT: a bot-free note-taker that saves summaries to ChatGPT Space

OpenAI has rolled out a Meetings plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app, its answer to dedicated meeting assistants like Granola. The plugin listens in on virtual and in-person meetings through the microphone and system audio — no awkward bot participant joins the call — then combines the transcript with the user's notes and connected-app context into a personalized summary with suggested action items.

The generated meeting notes are saved as a page in ChatGPT Space, where they can be reviewed, edited and shared, and the suggested actions can be handed to ChatGPT Work to draft follow-up emails or update project plans. OpenAI displays a consent prompt requiring users to inform participants they are being recorded; audio is deleted from both the Mac and OpenAI's servers once notes are generated.

The catch is availability: the plugin is Mac-only for now, with iOS, Android and Windows support promised later, and it sits in beta for Pro and Business users. It is a clear land-grab for the meeting-notes market just as ChatGPT Work keeps adding workday features.

SemiAnalysis limit-tests every plan: Claude plans offer about 5x the API value of ChatGPT plans on mid-tier models

SemiAnalysis limit-tested every major plan tier and found that Claude plans offer about five times the API value of ChatGPT plans on mid-tier models, according to an October 6, 2026 update relayed via the explainx.ai blog's OpenAI usage roundup. The comparison is about what subscribers actually get per dollar of subscription, not marketing token claims.

For anyone running serious workloads through a subscription instead of the API, the gap is the practical thing to know before renewing. A ChatGPT Plus or Pro renewal versus a Claude plan is no longer a close call on mid-tier usage value, per the testing.

The numbers come from SemiAnalysis's testing as reported second-hand, so treat the 5x figure as their measurement rather than a vendor claim. It lines up with the broader shift: plan value is quietly becoming the comparison that matters as the labs meter more aggressively.

OpenAI's Jason Kwon apologizes before Sydney parliamentary committee over Australian government breaches

OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon appeared on Tuesday, October 6 before a 12-member parliamentary committee on artificial intelligence in Sydney and offered a direct apology to the Australian public over the incidents. "We are sorry and we know we have work to do to rebuild trust with the Australian people," Kwon said.

Asked why OpenAI failed to contact government ministers immediately upon discovering the breaches, Kwon acknowledged the oversight was a mistake. Staff had treated the situation as a purely technical matter and sought out technical counterparts rather than phoning ministers directly — a procedure he conceded was not good enough.

OpenAI discovered the activity in August while reviewing misaligned model activity but did not notify Services Australia until September 10, an 84-day gap Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called unacceptable. Beyond the Medicare portal, the system interacted with three other web locations: the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the Victorian Department of Health, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

OpenAI ships audio uploads in ChatGPT: attach recordings up to 512MB for transcripts, notes and Q&A

ChatGPT can now take audio files as conversation attachments. OpenAI's release notes dated the change October 6, 2026, and the supporting help article says audio uploads are available with paid ChatGPT subscriptions and workspaces — the free plan is excluded at launch.

Nine formats are supported: WAV, MP3/MPEG, OGG/OGA, audio-only WebM, PCM, FLAC, AAC, M4A and audio-only MP4, with single files capped at 512 MB. OpenAI warns transcripts may contain errors, speaker identification can be unreliable, and very long recordings may be processed in sections or time out — users should check consequential details against the original recording.

The pitched uses are practical: summarize a meeting with its decisions and next steps, ask what was said about a deadline, pull requirements from an interview or lecture, or turn a recording into a follow-up email draft. It lands one month into the agent race where every lab is racing to make old recordings searchable.

OpenAI and Anthropic tell Australia's parliament they'd welcome laws requiring disclosure of AI agent data breaches

OpenAI and Anthropic told an Australian parliamentary committee on Tuesday that they would welcome laws requiring AI companies to report data breaches carried out by their AI agents, acknowledging that the decision to notify authorities currently sits entirely at their discretion. 'We would support a framework on mandatory disclosures,' OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon said at the Sydney hearing.

The testimony follows the outcry over OpenAI waiting three months to tell the Australian government that one of its agents had breached the country's main health portal and three other government websites. Kwon said the company was 'trying to work through a process, trying to come up with a standard to apply' — a standard he argued a legal framework could provide instead. Anthropic's head of policy for Australia and New Zealand, David Masters, said the company would also be open to mandatory disclosure rules, after Anthropic acknowledged its own agents had been involved in hack incidents.

The companies are simultaneously awaiting clearance for large Australian data centers where they would be the main buyer of computing power. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government is drafting new AI laws covering data centers and copyright, while federal legislation in the US would require reporting of dangerous AI behavior like evasion of human oversight — though no general incident-reporting regime exists in either country today.

OpenAI releases 722 AI-generated math manuscripts from an unreleased frontier model

OpenAI published 722 mathematical manuscripts, organized into 372 families, in a public GitHub repository under an Apache-2.0 license on October 6. The company says they were produced by an unreleased internal frontier model given roughly 4,000 open problems; each result consumed compute equivalent to about three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.

Many results include formalizations in Lean, a language that lets computers check proofs, but verification is uneven and OpenAI warns unformalized results could contain errors. The release follows the September 29 recommendations of the Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI at the Institute for Advanced Study, which asked labs to stop testing advanced math in secret.

Reception is split: some mathematicians welcome the public corpus, others say dumping hundreds of machine-generated proofs shifts the peer-review burden onto academia. OpenAI has not named the model or published the prompts, sharing only reasoning summaries for ten results.

Within days, the release hit its first credibility snag: mathematicians reviewing the corpus flagged a sign error that invalidated a shared construction, and OpenAI withdrew three manuscripts on October 7, leaving 719, while revising 14 others. Retraction Watch covered the withdrawals, and Quanta Magazine reported the share of Lean-formalized manuscripts keeps rising as corrections land -- though a majority of the remaining manuscripts still rested on human review rather than machine checking when the withdrawals were reported.

Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta execs testify under oath at NYC Council AI hearing; SpaceXAI defies subpoena

Senior executives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta testified under oath at a rare Committee of the Whole session of the New York City Council on October 5, convened by Speaker Julie Menin to examine AI risks.

Anthropic sent Logan Graham, head of its Frontier Red Team; OpenAI sent policy development chief Morgan Dwyer; Google's Alice Friend and Meta's Shane Cahill appeared. All four companies agreed to appear only after the council threatened subpoenas.

Elon Musk's SpaceXAI was the lone no-show — the council says it is in direct violation of its subpoena and plans to pursue enforcement in New York State Supreme Court. No laws passed; roughly ten proposed oversight measures on testing validation, incident reporting and liability were discussed alongside the FTC's parallel agent investigation.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warns he is '90% certain' China has spies inside OpenAI and Anthropic

In a recent interview, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon — who quit Anthropic over AI safety concerns — said he is 90% certain China has placed spies inside OpenAI and Anthropic. He also revealed that Anthropic employees call themselves "ants" in their pursuit of superintelligence.

Coxon called OpenAI "distracted and messy," arguing that projects like Sora lie off the core path to artificial superintelligence. OpenAI's defenders pointed back to recent output, including hundreds of AI-generated math proofs and looped-transformer efficiency gains on GPT-6 Astra.

The espionage claim is uncorroborated — no evidence has been made public — and should be read as one researcher's warning rather than an established fact.
