Microsoft announced its biggest Copilot update to date on Friday, with CEO Satya Nadella pitching Copilot as "a new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor, and every task." The redesign bundles four pieces: Autopilot, a proactive long-running agent built for the enterprise (previously called Scout); Code, which builds apps from natural-language descriptions and hosts them inside a company's own tenant; Home, which brings Chat and Cowork together; and Office, with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now fully embedded in Copilot.

The other half of the pitch is proactivity. Autopilot gets its own identity and workspace and keeps working in the background — monitoring channels, following up on conversations, handling recurring tasks — after people log off. A new "Today" experience surfaces the most important information from across Microsoft 365 without being asked, Copilot can now be invoked directly in Teams, and Microsoft says a coming update will route work to Chat, Cowork, or Code automatically so users never have to pick a mode.

Home and Code start rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier program in the coming weeks, while Autopilot expands to private preview at the end of September. Advanced features move to usage-based billing with new FinOps for AI controls so businesses can track what their agents spend. No model benchmarks came with the announcement — this is a product and platform play, not a model release.

The Windows and macOS Copilot apps are getting an embedded web-browser panel that sits side-by-side with the AI conversation. Browse and chat in the same window — Copilot can see what you’re looking at.

It’s opt-in and admin-gated: organizations enable it through the BrowsingEnabled policy, so IT shops worried about an AI reading browser tabs can keep it off. Broad rollout lands at the end of November.

The direction is clear — every major assistant wants to live next to the browser. Whether users keep the panel open is the open question.

Grok models are now selectable inside Microsoft Copilot, confirmed September 12 — the xAI/Microsoft partnership moving from press release to product. Users get a non-Microsoft model choice inside the same Copilot surface.

Separately, SpaceXAI was added as a Copilot subprocessor with an opt-in admin setting that enables Grok inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Frontier customers (excluding EU/EFTA/UK and government tenants), effective September 18. This is the real distribution play: Grok inside Office documents.
