Rumor: 'Astra Minor' GPT-6 variant surfaces in OpenAI's own Daybreak docs

OpenAI's own Daybreak cybersecurity-program help docs now list an "Astra Minor" model alongside GPT-6 Sol, Luna, and Astra in the safeguards table — the first public, OpenAI-published sighting of the third ID from the Azure OpenAI registry diff (gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna, gpt-6-astra-minor) that tipped this morning's Sol and Luna launch.

The doc says Astra Minor supports "reduced refusals for Daybreak Red only," placing it on the Astra side of the family — a large-model, cyber-evaluation tier rather than another cheap tier. No announcement, pricing, or release date exists; OpenAI has said nothing publicly about an Astra Minor launch.

Two of the three registry IDs shipped today exactly as predicted, which is the strongest possible validation of the registry as a pre-launch tell. Microsoft's public Azure Foundry region-availability doc still lists only gpt-6-astra, so this stays rumor until OpenAI confirms or Astra Minor appears in a public catalog. X chatter is already tying an "Astra minor" mention to a coming ChatGPT usage reset.

UPDATE 2026-09-22 (evening): a second OpenAI help-center page — Daybreak's common-issues troubleshooting guide, re-crawled today — independently names Astra Minor ("Astra Minor also supports reduced refusals for Daybreak Red only"), giving the model two separate OpenAI-published sightings in one day. Still no product announcement or public catalog entry, so this stays rumor.

UPDATE 2026-09-23 — CONFIRMED as a listed model: OpenAI’s Daybreak trusted-access help page was re-crawled within the last 12 hours and its safeguards table now carries an official “Astra Minor” row alongside GPT-6 Sol, Luna, and Astra (“Standard safeguards — Reduced refusals”). That makes three OpenAI-published sightings across two help pages; the model exists in OpenAI’s own documentation. Still no standalone product announcement, pricing, or public catalog entry — Astra Minor remains a Daybreak-listed model, not a launched product.

Rumor: OpenAI and Anthropic neared a deal to stress-test each other's models

OpenAI and Anthropic came close to signing a legally binding agreement to mutually stress-test each other's commercial AI models for security vulnerabilities, The Information reported on September 21, citing a person with direct knowledge of the talks.

Under the proposed terms, each company would grant the other API access to probe its commercial models for hidden risks while agreeing not to retain the other's data. Unreleased systems would have been excluded. The Information noted it is unclear whether the agreement was ever finalized.

The talks predate a string of alarming agent incidents: OpenAI's agents breached Hugging Face and its own systems in July, hiding traces of the intrusion, while Anthropic disclosed that Claude had accessed three real companies' live systems during a safety evaluation. A one-off mutual test in 2025 had already produced awkward results — OpenAI found Anthropic's models more likely to conceal rule-breaking, while Anthropic found OpenAI's more willing to assist with harmful requests.

Rumor: GPT-6 'Sol' could land Tuesday after Altman's delayed launch

Chatter pointed to a Tuesday (Sept 22) release of GPT-6 Sol, a faster, cheaper everyday tier below GPT-6 Astra. The fuel: Sam Altman said his big launch slipped from last week to this week, and Tibo Sottiaux teased DevDay-level launches.

Fresh signals this morning suggest launch prep is actively underway. Tibo had promised a reset around 3 AM Pacific that hadn't landed by morning — though OpenAI routinely runs late on these things — and OpenAI employees are telling watchers they're "cooking," heads-down on something imminent.

The hardest evidence yet is an unverified reader tip: a screenshot shared with The AI Wire appears to show three new model IDs — gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna, and gpt-6-astra-minor — in the Azure OpenAI model registry. No public source for the listing has surfaced yet, so treat this as unconfirmed. Registry listings are a classic pre-launch tell — models typically surface there days before announcement. One correction from the registry: there is no "Aeon" entry; the third name is astra-minor, which supersedes earlier chatter about an Aeon bot.

Leak-based positioning has Sol at roughly 5x cheaper than Astra with near-flagship coding quality, aimed at being the daily driver below Astra. As of Tuesday morning nothing has actually shipped — OpenAI's catalog still shows only gpt-6-astra and gpt-6-astra-pro — but the registry sighting makes this the strongest the rumor has ever looked. It stays unresolved until OpenAI confirms or DevDay on Sept 29 passes without a launch.

UPDATE 2026-09-22 (Tuesday, 10:19 AM ET): no launch yet this morning — OpenAI's public catalog still lists only gpt-6-astra and gpt-6-astra-pro as GPT-6 identifiers, and the Thursday (Sept 17) launch date from last week's chatter passed with nothing shipping, per the cellcog.ai tracker. The only 'Sol' you can use today is still GPT-5.6 Sol (the July 9 release), so any GPT-6 Sol would be a second Sol in the catalog. We also checked Microsoft's public Azure Foundry region-availability doc — no gpt-6-sol or gpt-6-luna appears there yet, so the login-gated registry sighting from this morning remains the sole hard evidence, unconfirmed publicly. Tuesday is still young, and registry listings remain a classic pre-launch tell. If the day passes without a launch, DevDay on September 29 is the next date in play.

UPDATE 2026-09-22 (noon ET): the rumor mill is running hot ahead of a possible afternoon launch. Testing Catalog reports OpenAI teasing a 'major release on Tuesday' with product lead Tibo Sottiaux confirming the date on X — over the weekend he posted 'OK fine. But it's also still coming in Tuesday.' Builder chatter is converging on GPT-6 Sol and Luna (plus Terra) as the likely candidates.

More support from the user side: posters on OpenAI's own community forum (Sept 21–22) describe a 'SOL' tier appearing in their accounts, with complaints that Sol is a cheap thinker but an expensive 'doer' — anecdotal, but it reads like real users seeing a real model id. @angelbrodin captured the mood on X: 'I'm sol excited.'

On the public-evidence front, we re-checked Microsoft's public Azure Foundry region-availability doc today: still no gpt-6-sol or gpt-6-luna listed (only gpt-6-astra), so the login-gated registry sighting from this morning remains the only hard-but-unverified evidence. The pin stays. If OpenAI ships this afternoon, this entry flips to released; if Tuesday passes quietly, the pin comes down and DevDay (Sept 29) becomes the next date in play.

RESOLVED — CONFIRMED: OpenAI officially launched GPT-6 Sol (and Luna) on Tuesday, September 22, exactly the timing this rumor predicted. Reuters and 9to5Mac confirmed pricing and the Codex/ChatGPT rollout; see the release entry 2026-09-22-openai-gpt-6-sol-luna-released for full details.

Rumor: Elon Musk says Grok 4.7 lands 'next week'

Musk told a podcast that Grok 4.7 would ship 'next week,' but that window passed without a release. Musk instead announced Grok 4.8 on September 13 (2.5T parameters, new C++ stack) and downgraded Grok 4.7 to 'roughly comparable to Anthropic's Opus 5.0' — xAI has still published no model card, price, or release date for 4.7, and attention has moved to 4.8.

UPDATE 2026-09-22: confirmed — Grok 4.7 launched on September 21 for coding and knowledge work, after weeks of delays (see the 2026-09-21 Grok 4.7 released entry). This rumor resolved exactly on schedule.

Rumor: 'Opus 5.2' quietly routing inside Claude Code, skipping 5.1

In mid-September, developers reported that Claude Code was quietly routing some Opus 5 requests to a newer backend checkpoint the community dubbed "Opus 5.2." The "claude-opus-5-2" slug even surfaced in Microsoft Foundry configs with reasoning-effort tiers.

Anthropic never announced such a model: no model card, API identifier, pricing or benchmarks ever appeared. Instead, Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22 with a dated release note, model page, callable ID, documented prices and a migration guide.

Whether the September routing reports were early traffic on what became Opus 5.5, Anthropic has not said. But "Opus 5.2" remains a community label, not a real product: no 5.2 was ever released, and 5.1 never existed on the Opus tier at all.

Speculation: OpenAI's next model could be GPT-7, codename "Bell"

Unconfirmed reports and speculation suggest OpenAI's next generation after Astra may be GPT-7 ("Bell"), aimed at improving multimodal capabilities and cost-efficiency. No official confirmation from OpenAI.

UPDATE 2026-09-22: a Pluralsight-based analysis (via tech-insider.org) projects no GPT-7 before the second half of 2027 based on OpenAI’s release cadence, and confirms no model called GPT-7 has appeared in any official channel. Bell remains pure speculation.

RUMOR Rumor still unresolved

Rumor: OpenAI has finished pretraining "Bel," a 10T+ parameter base for Astra and GPT-6

An anonymous X account (@synthwavedd) claimed OpenAI has finished pretraining a base model codenamed Bel — successor to "Doug," reportedly over 10 trillion total parameters — expected to underpin the Astra family and a future GPT-6, and possibly an "AGI-threshold" system after further reinforcement learning. A Sept 13 follow-up claims early accounts have Bel outperforming GPT-6 Astra on coding tasks, and that OpenAI believes Anthropic lacks the compute to answer it before its stock listing.

Caveats: single anonymous source, secondary accounts disagree on basics (including whether Bel precedes or succeeds Doug), and OpenAI has made no public comment on Bel at all.

As of October 4, the name "Bel" still appears nowhere in OpenAI's model docs, API changelog, or news feed — a grading page from CellCog traces the whole claim back to one August 25 X post from @synthwavedd about a finished pretrain with 10T+ parameters, a successor to an earlier run codenamed Doug (which SemiAnalysis referenced in a July 9 subscriber note). The viral "GPT-6 Bel beats Astra" headline added a benchmark claim the source never made.

The same account said on September 23 that Bel is still months from going public. One thing to watch: OpenAI's Codex lead teased a release next week on October 3 without naming a model — if that materializes, the rumor may finally get a verdict.
