xAI debuts Grok, a 'rebellious' chatbot with real-time X data

xAI debuted Grok in November 2023, a chatbot for X Premium+ subscribers pitched as witty and rebellious, with real-time access to posts on X. It was Elon Musk's answer to ChatGPT, built by his new AI company barely four months after its founding.

Grok's X integration gave it a genuine differentiator: answers informed by live social media. In March 2024 xAI open-sourced Grok-1's weights, a surprise move that won goodwill with the open-source community.

The launch established xAI's playbook — move fast, differentiate on X data and personality, and iterate the Grok line aggressively.

Anthropic launches Claude 2 with 100K-token context

Anthropic launched Claude 2, its first model widely available to the public through a beta at claude.ai and the API. Its headline feature was a 100,000-token context window, which could swallow entire books or long documents in a single prompt.

Claude 2 was the first model widely seen as a genuine ChatGPT rival, with Anthropic claiming improvements in coding, math, and reasoning over its predecessor. The public beta expanded access beyond the UK and US rollout that followed.

The release set the pattern for Anthropic's strategy: longer context and stronger reasoning pitched as the responsible alternative to OpenAI's faster-moving lineup.

OpenAI releases GPT-4

OpenAI launched GPT-4, its first flagship successor to the model behind ChatGPT. It was multimodal from the start — accepting image inputs alongside text — and dramatically stronger at reasoning, instruction-following, and exams, scoring in the top 10% on a simulated bar exam.

GPT-4 debuted for ChatGPT Plus subscribers and as a waitlisted API, with 8K and later 32K context variants. Microsoft confirmed its new Bing chat was already running on GPT-4, making it the quiet engine of the search industry's AI pivot.

The release also marked a shift in OpenAI's openness: the company published a system card and red-teaming results but disclosed almost nothing about architecture, training data, or model size — a stance that drew criticism from researchers.

Anthropic releases Claude, its first public AI assistant

Anthropic released Claude, its first public conversational AI assistant, initially through an API available to select partners and developers. The model was trained with the company's Constitutional AI approach, which aimed to steer behavior with a written set of principles rather than pure human feedback.

Claude arrived about three and a half months after ChatGPT and positioned itself as a safety-first alternative from a team founded by former OpenAI researchers. Early access went through a waitlist while Anthropic scaled up capacity.

The launch began the numbered Claude lineage that Anthropic has iterated ever since, from Claude 2 through the 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x generations.

Google launches Bard, its rushed answer to ChatGPT

Google launched Bard in March 2023, its hurried response to ChatGPT, built on the LaMDA conversational model. The rollout followed a shaky announcement in February — including a factual error in its own demo — that wiped billions off Alphabet's market value.

Bard opened to the public through a waitlist and gradually expanded, but it consistently trailed ChatGPT in capability through 2023. Google positioned it as an experiment while its stronger Gemini models were still in training.

In February 2024 Google retired the Bard name entirely, rebranding the assistant as Gemini and folding it into the model family that succeeded it.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT, powered by GPT-3.5

OpenAI released ChatGPT as a free research preview, a conversational interface built on a GPT-3.5-series model. It could answer questions, write essays and code, and hold extended back-and-forth conversations — and it exploded, reaching an estimated 100 million users within two months, the fastest-growing consumer app in history at the time.

The launch kicked off the modern AI race overnight. Google declared a 'code red' within weeks, Microsoft deepened its OpenAI partnership, and every major lab reorganized around conversational AI.

ChatGPT's underlying model was GPT-3.5, an instruction-tuned evolution of GPT-3. It set the template for everything that followed: the chat interface, RLHF-tuned assistants, and the Plus subscription tier that arrived the following February.
