Cloudflare acquires Deno: entire team joins Workers, Deno Deploy winds down in six months
Cloudflare announced on October 9 that it is acquiring Deno, the startup behind the Deno JavaScript runtime co-founded by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder. The entire Deno team is joining Cloudflare, and financial terms were not disclosed. Deno had raised about $26 million.
The product plan centres on celld, Deno's open-source implementation of the Workers and Durable Objects programming model, which Cloudflare intends to merge into its own workerd runtime. Both sides frame the goal as making self-hosted Workers a first-class path rather than tying the model to Cloudflare's network alone.
The wind-down is explicit: Deno Deploy will run for six more months with migration support for paying customers moving to Workers, and the Deno runtime will get monthly bug-fix and security releases for one year before development ends. The runtime stays open source, and the JSR registry keeps running on Cloudflare infrastructure.
