xAI grabbed dot.com ahead of OpenAI's Dots launch — and pointed it at Grok

Before OpenAI took the stage at DevDay to unveil Dots, its always-on AI agent, xAI had already acquired the domain dot.com. Visitors typing it in today land on Grok's download page, not on anything from OpenAI.

The internet read it as a deliberate troll. Whether xAI registered the domain in July anticipating OpenAI's product name or simply to catch typo traffic for "bot" remains unclear, but the timing turned OpenAI's launch day into free promotion for its rival.

The move fits the long-running Musk–OpenAI rivalry: Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, left, sued it unsuccessfully, and built xAI and Grok as a direct competitor.
