AMD buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2B; she becomes AMD's chief scientist

AMD is going from investor to owner at World Labs, the spatial-intelligence lab founded by Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock deal, announced September 28 and valued at about $8.2 billion, brings World Labs' model research inside AMD's hardware and software strategy. It is AMD's second-largest acquisition ever, behind the $50 billion Xilinx purchase, and it is expected to close by the end of 2026 pending regulatory approval.

Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. World Labs builds "world models" — models that generate and simulate physical environments from text, image, and video inputs — with applications in robotics and simulated training. Its first product, Marble, turns source material into explorable 3D worlds; its Atlas model predicts how a scene looks from a new camera angle.

The pattern is chip suppliers moving up the stack. Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion and licensed Poolside's model-building system; AMD is now buying the model lab itself. CEO Lisa Su frames it plainly: building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving.
