OpenAI posted an incident notice on its official status page Tuesday morning: “Increased error rate for Plus and Pro users,” naming ChatGPT’s Conversations component as the only affected component. The notice first went up at 9:58 a.m. UTC (5:58 a.m. ET) in the Investigating state, classified as degraded performance.

In its latest update OpenAI said it had “identified that users are experiencing elevated errors” and was working on a mitigation — with no recovery notice yet posted. It’s the second strike on the same component for paid tiers this month: an identical September 9 incident moved from Investigating to Resolved within about 90 minutes.

The status page still lists the Conversations component at 99.96% uptime for June–September, with the broader ChatGPT group at 99.65%. September has been bumpy overall, with resolved incidents for Europe errors, GPT-5.6 errors on paid plans, and elevated API error rates.

UPDATE 2026-09-22 (afternoon ET): OpenAI marked this incident resolved at 10:37 a.m. UTC (6:37 a.m. ET) — about 40 minutes after the notice first went up. If you saw elevated errors on ChatGPT this morning, service should be back to normal; no post-mortem or further updates have been posted on the status page.
