Google has opened pre-orders for Googlebook, its new laptop category built around Gemini Intelligence rather than another browser tab. The devices run Googlebook OS — Android with ChromeOS desktop foundations — and lead with on-device Gemini features: Magic Pointer brings Gemini to whatever is on screen after a cursor wiggle, Rambler turns messy voice notes into cleaned-up text with action items, and Create My Widget lets you describe a desktop widget in plain language. Google also bundles Antigravity for app builders and a Linux terminal for agentic coding tools.

The commercial details are concrete. Base models start at $899, with US retail beginning October 4 and Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia following on October 5. Every unit includes 12 months of Google AI Pro — Gemini Advanced plus 5TB of storage — and Google is specifying an on-device NPU of 45+ TOPS. First-wave hardware comes from five manufacturers at once: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

This is Google's biggest bet yet on making Gemini the operating layer of personal computing, not just an app. Whether the magic-pointer workflow is enough to move laptop buyers away from Copilot+ PCs and Apple Intelligence Macs is the open question — Circle to Search never produced that kind of shift on phones.
