OpenAI releases ChatGPT work-use data across 165 activities and nearly 100 countries — decision-making is the top US use, at about 1 in 5 requests
OpenAI published new Signals data on Monday, October 26, mapping work-related ChatGPT messages to 165 standardized work activities across nearly 100 countries. The dataset covers seven quarters, from Q1 2025 through Q3 2026, and classifies activities using the US Department of Labor's O*NET framework.
In the United States, making decisions and solving problems was the largest single use, at 21.6% of work-related requests in Q1 2026, ahead of creative thinking at 15.6% and writing up information at 11.8%. Germany looked similar, with decision-making at 19.4%.
The headline trend is diversification: across 74 countries tracked in every quarter, the ten most common activities fell from 56.0% of work messages in Q1 2025 to 51.1% in Q3 2026. OpenAI noted the data covers individual ChatGPT plans only — not enterprise messages or Codex — and measures what people ask about, not productivity gains or job effects.
