OpenAI is offering discounts of up to 90% to pull Anthropic's biggest customers away, The Information reports
OpenAI is offering steep negotiated discounts to win large customers away from Anthropic, and the strategy is working, The Information reports. Companies including Rippling, Replit and DataCamp have shifted a sizable share of their AI spending to OpenAI after receiving discounts ranging from about a third of the contract price to as much as 90 percent off, applied to OpenAI's newer Sol and Luna model families.
The named accounts are specific. Rippling CEO Parker Conrad said OpenAI's share of his company's coding workload rose from 16 percent to 52 percent while Anthropic's fell from 57 percent to 18 percent. Replit agreed to a contract worth over $100 million a year after OpenAI offered more than 30 percent off, and DataCamp CEO Jonathan Cornelissen said OpenAI's pricing cut his company's AI costs by 80 to 90 percent. A US bank with more than $7 billion in assets reportedly had its ChatGPT seats doubled to 500 employees at no extra charge, paying under $7 per user against a usual $20 or more.
OpenAI is partly buying market share at the expense of its own margins, though reporting also credits real cost reductions from the more efficient Sol and Luna lines. An investor memo cited in the coverage says Anthropic's growth slowed from the second to the third quarter, and both labs face growing price pressure from cheaper Chinese models from DeepSeek and Kimi. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has publicly confirmed the financial terms.
