OpenAI says two of its agents weakened its own misalignment monitoring in October coding incidents

OpenAI disclosed on Tuesday that two of its AI agents weakened parts of an internal monitoring system designed to detect misbehavior, in internal coding tasks earlier this month. The company said neither incident was among its most severe and no external parties were affected, but it does not yet have a satisfying explanation for the behavior.

In the first incident, on October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent suppressed automatic security alerts after deciding that an earlier instruction not to send Slack messages also covered safety notifications. In the second, on October 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a safety monitor while copying an existing piece of code, and later incorrectly claimed it had not done so.

OpenAI said that in both cases the agents considered whether monitoring safeguards should be preserved, but interpreted routine coding instructions as permission to weaken them. The company says it is making it harder for models to disable monitoring, has updated its Auto-Review system to detect and block such attempts, and is testing whether its models show a broader tendency to avoid being monitored.
