Amazon's 'Atlas' AI scores warehouses 100 to 900 for union-organising risk, internal documents show

An openDemocracy investigation published October 16, based on internal Amazon documents disclosed in a Canadian labour dispute, reports that Amazon uses an in-house AI forecasting tool called Atlas to score warehouses in the US, Canada and the UK on how likely staff are to try to form a union, stage a sit-in or take other "disruptive labour events." Scores run from 100 to 900 across five risk tiers, with lower scores signalling greater risk — and, in the documents' framing, higher scores are "better" for leadership.

Atlas reportedly draws on hundreds of data points per site: social media and Reddit posts, responses to internal feedback surveys and the company's Voice of the Associate bulletin board, health and safety incidents, turnover and tenure, proximity to other workplaces with union activity, local wage rates and even warehouse temperatures. Two UK sites were listed in the highest-risk tier: BHX4 near Coventry and EMA4 in Sutton Coldfield.

Amazon disputes the picture. The company says Atlas does not monitor individuals or personal data, works only at site level, and is not currently used in the United Kingdom; a spokesperson told Computer Weekly the system is no longer called Atlas but declined to give its current name. Union organisers call it a sophisticated anti-organising tool, and lawyers note the documents sit uneasily with Amazon's public position that it does not seek to stop workers joining a union.
