Trump names intelligence chief Jay Clayton AI czar to head new 'Super Intelligence Force' with 120 days to report on AI risks

President Donald Trump said Sunday he has named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton the administration's AI czar, tasking him with heading the newly created Super Intelligence Force (SIF) and coordinating federal efforts to maintain US AI leadership. The announcement, made on Truth Social, confirmed a Wall Street Journal report from the previous day citing an interview with Clayton.

Clayton said the task force will have 120 days to produce a report assessing the risks and opportunities posed by AI and recommending what role the federal government should play. "The risk of not being first is high," he told the Journal. The panel's charter calls for reviewing AI-related risks and the government's current reporting mechanisms for breaches, hacks, and other incidents.

This is the second time Trump has named an AI czar: venture capitalist David Sacks held the role at the beginning of the second term. The move follows the September 29 executive order renaming AI "Super Intelligence" in federal communications, and lands alongside recent White House AI moves — the AI luncheon and the White House Accord on Super Intelligence — as bipartisan lawmakers press for action after a string of agent incidents.
