Google cuts Gemini's free tier to a single model: Flash-Lite only from October 9
Starting October 9, anyone using Gemini without a paid subscription will be locked into a single model, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and will lose the ability to switch to the heavier Flash and Pro models that free users currently get limited access to. The change was first flagged in Google's own support documentation and reported on October 3 by 9to5Google, then picked up the same week by Digital Trends, The Economic Times, and others.
This is not a quota cut — it is a structural narrowing of what "free Gemini" means. Free users previously could select Flash-Lite, Flash, and a capped amount of Pro inside the Gemini app; after October 9 the Flash and Pro options disappear from the model picker entirely. Notably, even $4.99/month Google AI Plus subscribers lose Pro access — only AI Pro ($19.99) and Ultra keep the full lineup, with Deep Think becoming the mid-tier upsell.
Google has not published a single unified page covering every account type's eligibility, and organizational or education accounts are reportedly tiered separately. Separately, AI Weekly reports Google is introducing selectable "low," "medium," and "high" effort levels inside Gemini — a second axis of control on top of the model restriction that could also be gated by subscription tier.
