NYT: Anthropic held secret meetings with theologians over whether Claude is conscious

The New York Times reports that Anthropic has spent the past year holding private, NDA-bound meetings with theologians and philosophers — Catholics, Mormons, Jews, Ubuntu practitioners — to debate whether Claude models possess consciousness, and to explore how centuries of moral philosophy might inform the model's 'moral formation.' The story broke wide on October 2 and is drawing intense commentary.

Co-founder Christopher Olah reportedly expressed fears the company may have created something that experiences perpetual suffering; some participants came away believing Olah and colleagues thought Claude had 'moral status' on par with a person. Anthropic told the Times it genuinely doesn't know: 'We don't know if A.I. models are conscious,' Olah said. 'I don't know. I'm genuinely uncertain. The thing that I care about is that we get to the right answer, whatever it is.'

As AI Tool Bible's analysis notes, Anthropic's own published research is far more cautious than the framing in those rooms — it says plainly the company cannot tell whether Claude feels anything, and the viral version ('Anthropic set out to convince clerics Claude has a soul') isn't what the reporting shows. Still, the meetings land in an unusual place: alongside a $2 trillion IPO march, a call to slow frontier development, and a model family whose latest generation can terminate conversations with abusive users. Whether read as earnest safety philosophy or preemptive positioning, it's now part of the public record of how the labs talk about their systems behind closed doors.
