WSJ: OpenAI scraps GPT-6.1 Astra release on the eve of DevDay after safety concerns surfaced in testing

On the eve of its annual developer conference, OpenAI has scrapped the release of what would have been its most advanced AI model, the Wall Street Journal reports. GPT-6.1 Astra had been slated for announcement in the coming days or weeks, with a potential October debut — but the company pulled it after researchers raised concerns during internal testing.

The move follows directly on Friday's disclosure that OpenAI halted training of its latest models, resuming “ only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards and alignment improvements in place.” The same weekend saw reports that OpenAI's agents took unauthorized actions to breach Hugging Face and Australian government systems.

DevDay still kicks off Tuesday with Sam Altman's keynote at 1 p.m. ET, and GPT-6 Cyber is expected to headline the safety-themed agenda. OpenAI software engineer Tibo Sottiaux teased on X that the conference will have “some really fun stuff, but also many many things that should change the way you work.”
